䷂屯卦 (Difficulty at the Beginning): Text and Commentary

2025-08-28

卦辞 (Gua Ci - Hexagram Judgment)

屯:元亨利贞。勿用有攸往,利建侯。

Chun: Great virtue brings fortune and success. It is not appropriate to proceed with any endeavor; favorable conditions exist for establishing leadership structures.

彖传 (Xiang Chuan - Commentary on the Image)

《彖》曰:屯,刚柔始交而难生,动乎险中,大亨贞。雷雨之动满盈,天造草昧,宜建万国,立君以宁之。

The Xiang Commentary states: Chun signifies initial difficulty arising from the first intercourse of firmness and compliance. Action unfolds amid peril, yet great integrity prevails. Like thunderstorms surging with full force, Heaven creates primordial chaos—it becomes fitting to establish myriad domains and appoint rulers to bring stability.

Notes for Readers:

  1. What is a Guàcí (Hexagram Judgment)?
A short verse summarizing the core principle or outcome predicted by the trigram combination. Think of it as a cosmic weather forecast—guiding decisions based on universal patterns observed since ancient times. For example, Qian’s judgment promises auspicious results when initiative aligns with natural laws.

  2. What is a Tuànzhuàn (Image Commentary)?
Expanded poetic analysis linking symbolism to real-world dynamics. Unlike prophecies, these commentaries interpret how shapes/lines reflect states of being (e.g., dragons rising = seizing opportunities). They bridge philosophy and practicality by showing why certain energies manifest as they do.
